My Crayfish Died While Moulting plus Crayfish Gallery

Image
Crayfish moult approximately every month or so. If they are in a tank with other Crayfish, they are most vulnerable during the moulting process which may take up to two hours. Unless they are in a sheltered nook, the other Crayfish may attack and even eat her. After moulting, the shell is soft and takes a few hours to harden. This Female was literally 'frightened out of its skin' by an aggressive Male, and could not complete the moulting process. So it died. RIP Keeping Crayfish in household aquariums is a hobby which I took up during the Covid19 lockdown period. Crayfish come in many colors. Here are photos of some of my Crayfish.

The Mother is fanning the eggs to aerate them. The eggs will take  4 to 6 weeks for the babies to hatch and they will stick to their Mother's body for 1-2 weeks. In the meantime I will have to find a way to separate the Mother and her Husband from the other crayfish. But first I have to determine which one is her Husband. The wrong choice could result in both eggs and Mother being eaten. Crayfish can be opportunistic cannibals.
